Welcome to The Nerd Cut.
This is where I take movies that bug me for one reason or another and produce an alternate cut of them. Maybe the movie suffered from a bad ending or an unfortunate casting, maybe it had major plot holes indicative of lazy writing, or maybe it was nearly perfect except for that one little detail — like a small piece of excrement folded into an otherwise perfect batch of cookie dough.
Flawed movies annoy me, because I’m that kind of nerd. So let us put right those stories that had so much promise, but for lack of a quality editor left a bad taste in the mouth.

- The Nerd Cut: Star Wars, Episode III, Revenge of the SithI’ve been writing on some heavy themes lately. So how about a little light-hearted fare this week? I promise we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled deep dives into modern atrocity and what we can do about it very soon. But this week, let’s talk nerd. For those new around here, The Nerd Cuts are where ...
- The Nerd Cut: FallHow does one overcome physical and emotional challenges? That is the issue explored in the film Fall (2022) which is titled with a double meaning. As always, spoilers ahead. After her husband, Dan, falls to his death in a climbing accident, Becky falls into an alcoholic depression marked with nightmares and isolation from loved ones. Her ...
- The Nerd Cut: No Country For Old MenYou know how a great movie pulls you in and right from the outset you form a connection with the main character? And aren’t you just captivated when – after enjoying that character’s white-knuckle journey for an hour and a half – he’s suddenly killed off-screen with zero explanation and never mentioned again? Don’t you ...
- The Nerd Cut: The Incredibles 3The Incredibles (2004) remains one of the best animated features ever made. A sequel was long promised and long delayed, fourteen years delayed. It was hard to imagine that Pixar had lacked decent story ideas, but twenty minutes into The Incredibles 2 (2018) it was clear that they had. Like many Pixar sequels, The Incredibles 2 stank. How could you take ...
- The Nerd Cut: La La LandFollow your dreams. Don’t let silly things like love get in your way. That’s a message that undoubtedly plays well in the screenwriting rooms in New York and Los Angeles – La La Land, as it’s sometimes called. La La Land, where the budding actress rejects the flawed but passionate loyalty of the man who adores her to ...
- The Nerd Cut: The Terminator FranchisePeople have been abusing terminators for years. This must end. There was once a time when terminators were treated with respect, sometimes even with adoration. Those days are long gone. In the modern era, terminators are treated like million-dollar chips on the craps table – put a few down on a random number and roll the ...
- The Nerd Cut: Creed III love almost everything about the Rocky franchise. The original Rocky deserves its accolades; Rocky II wasn’t great but it was a satisfying sequel. Rocky III is still my favorite despite it being the epitome of all things 80’s, and Rocky IV is both one of the best Cold War movies and one of the ...
- The Nerd Cut: The Last JediNow, let me say right up front that I enjoyed The Force Awakens. Sure, it was basically a rehash of A New Hope and had plenty of issues I could pick apart, but after the disappointment of the prequels I was satisfied with what I saw. I thought the ending set up Episode VII quite ...
- The Nerd Cut: Avengers EndgameI’ve decided to start a new series: The Nerd Cut. This is where I take movies that bug me for one reason or another and produce an alternate cut of them. Maybe the movie suffered from a bad ending or an unfortunate casting, maybe it had major plot holes indicative of lazy writing, or maybe ...
